- Benefits By State Editor

The Maryland Transportation Assistance Program (TAP) receives its funding from the TANF program which is administered by the Department of Human Service. The program provides its benefits to families from low-income backgrounds especially the recipients of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, however, it is not only limited to them. The program provides vehicles to people who have to travel for hours and by taking multiple modes of transportation due to lack of a car or other such vehicle. The program helps people to be more financially independent and stable in their jobs. Through the TAP program, many families get a used vehicle for two years to help them achieve stability in life.
There are many benefits of having a vehicle. The program helps improves the transportation conditions of people from low-income backgrounds who usually have no means of transport due to which many people end up leaving a job or not accepting it.
There are several regions in the state of Maryland where the citizens especially people from low-income backgrounds have to face many ordeals to reach their area of work due to the poor transportation system in that area. Most of these people cannot afford a vehicle due to a lack of financial stability. One of the most common reasons for people not being able to take up a job is the lack of feasibility and proper transit access. They end up taking up jobs that are less paying to them which further leads to poverty and the inability to afford food, clothes, and other necessities of life with the help of a network of partners all over the state of Maryland. Transportation Assistance Program (TAP) provides these people with an opportunity to find a better job without worrying about transit issues. This also helps people by providing flexible working hours.
The TAP program also helps people from low-income backgrounds that usually have to take 4–5-hour long rides to reach their location of work. Some of them also have to change their mode of transportation for example by taking the train, bus and more. The program gives these people more time to spend with their loved ones rather than spending hours traveling every day. They also have an opportunity to take care of other personal work that might have been difficult due to lack of time.
The program also leads to easy access to healthcare in low-income households. People can take their vehicle to the hospital and to the grocery store to buy fresh and healthy food which might be difficult without access to a vehicle.
The program also helps improve the individual’s lifestyle promoting a richer life and create a strong bond between the parents and children. When the parents have a vehicle they can take the children to their school activities, children can participate in more after school games and extra curriculum activities. With a vehicle, people can participate in many activities like community service programs that might not have been possible previously due to lack of access to public transit.
