The Children’s Health Insurance Program (MCHP) provides affordable health insurance to children of low-income families that are residing in the state of Maryland There are thousands of uninsured children, and this program provides them with an opportunity to get medical insurance and improve their health conditions. Kids who are dependent on their parents and are less than 18 years of age are eligible to apply for this program. In some cases, the program might also provide health insurance to uninsured parents as well.

The program is funded mutually by the federal government and the state of Maryland. The Department of Human Services is responsible for smoothly running the CHIP program.

The children who meet the eligibility criteria for the program are provided health care insurance through Managed Care Organizations (MCOs). Children who are less than 19 years of age are not eligible to avail the program benefits. The program is also available to pregnant women from different age groups. Families with a total household income of either 200% or less than the Federal Poverty Level (FDL) can apply for the Children’s Health Insurance Program in the state of Maryland.

People with a household income that is 300% of the FDL, with a premium, can also apply for the program benefits. Working parents with children who do not receive healthcare insurance from their employer can also apply for the program benefits. In some cases, even if you do receive healthcare insurance from work you should also apply and let the program representatives decide if you are eligible or not.

The Maryland CHIP program provides services for kids like regular child check-ups, immunization and other preventive measures, dental check-ups of the child, eye care services (eyeglasses, eye care services), and emergency services to the patients, medication payments, therapy, and much more. There is certain documentation that you are required to provide along with the CHIP application form. You must provide the household income, numbers of family members, the identity of each member, and Social Security number, bank statement, and other proof of income and assets. For pregnant women, written proof of pregnancy along with the expected delivery date should be provided.

There are certain steps that the parents are required to take to make sure their child’s healthcare is being insured by the Maryland CHIP program. You should also pay the premium each month within the deadline provided so that your child’s coverage is not discontinued. Every year, 60 days before the year ends, you will receive a program renewal package. You must fill that out and send it to your local DHS offices to continue receiving the program’s benefits. In case, you have to change your address make sure to inform the program office. You can contact the caseworker assigned to you by the program and inform them about your current address so that they can make changes to the documents.
